News: we can now automatically harvest papers from 24 publishers into ORA

If your Symplectic Elements/ORCID are up to date AND you are published by one of the 24 publishers connected to ORA via Publications Router, your publications can be automatically deposited in ORA without you having to do anything more.

Summary:

  • ORA is the University’s research archive, aiming to present a full picture of Oxford’s world-leading research; ORA is a critical component of our REF return, so it’s crucial we keep it up to date.

  • ORA has developed a new connection to the Publications Router service - which automatically collects research papers published gold open access on publisher websites.

  • This reduces the burden on authors to deposit things in multiple places and helps them comply with REF requirements without spending extra time or effort.

  • We’ve seen an immediate impact of the new technology: since connecting to Publications Router in mid-June, over 3,600 ORA records have been updated or created automatically.

What this means for you:

Until now, even when a paper was published open access with a journal and met all funder requirements, it still needed to be manually deposited into ORA by the author to ensure the University had a record of the outputs of its researchers. Now, for selected publishers, by connecting to Publications Router, ORA has enabled automated deposit of open access papers without requiring manual deposit by the author.

There are currently 24 publishers providing content. The full list can be found at https://pubrouter.jisc.ac.uk/about/providerlist/.

Saving you time:

Using this technology to automatically harvest papers from publisher websites helps minimise the time authors have to spend on funder compliance and REF reporting.

It helps our authors share their research; it helps researchers around the world find Oxford authors’ papers; and it will help ensure we’re up to date when it comes to the University’s next REF return, saving us all time later as well. Content in ORA is digitally preserved, which means that should the situation change for one of the publication journals, or websites, ORA will have a copy that will be made available for the long-term.

Action points:

  • ORA is connected to Symplectic Elements, so the easiest way to make sure automated deposit works for you is to set up (or update) your Elements account.

  • Then, when a paper is published listing your ORCID or email address, it will be available to both ORA and Elements.
