The Oxford University Research Archive (ORA) is a platform that stores, preserves and shares research outputs of the University.
You can deposit in ORA regardless of whether or not the output is published elsewhere.
Depositing your work in ORA makes it freely available for anyone to access, inside or outside the University of Oxford.
It is the simplest way to make your research open.
Deposit my work
What can I deposit in ORA?
You can deposit research outputs such as journal articles, conference papers or abstracts, book chapters, reports, theses, datasets and other materials in ORA.
Why should you deposit in ORA?
Depositing in ORA is free for Oxford University authors.
If you're studying for a DPhil, MLitt, MSc by Research or DClinPsych at Oxford University, you must deposit your final thesis open access in the Oxford University Research Archive (ORA) to complete your degree.
The benefits of depositing your work include:
- Your work can be discovered through search engines and major databases, giving it greater visibility and a greater chance of being cited by others.
- Your work will stay published and available online forever.
- Any work you deposit will have a permanent link and will typically have a unique identifier, making it easier to find, identify and cite.
- You can meet any funder requirements for making your research open access.
- Your research may count towards future funding for the University from the UK government, as part of the Research Excellence Framework (REF).
Copyright, ORA and your research
You can publish your article in a closed (subscription-only) journal but also deposit it in ORA to make it open access.
The University follows a policy which supports the rights of researchers to archive your author-accepted manuscript (AAM) in a repository such as ORA under a CC BY license. This is called 'rights retention'.
If you would like to opt out of this policy, and instead deposit your author-accepted manuscript into ORA subject to the terms of the publishing agreement, you can do so on a work-by-work basis via our opt out online form (SSO required).
Please note: if your research is funded, opting out may cause your research output to be non-compliant with your funder policy.
This uses the rights retention principles as set out in the University's open access policy. Find out more about rights retention at Oxford (SSO required).
