The UKRI open access policy for longform publications is now in effect as of 01/01/2024. The policy mandates the open access publication of longform works such as monographs, book chapters, edited collections, and trade books which are the sole research output resulting from research funded by UKRI (unless they are the outcome of a UKRI Training Grant).

Actions for researchers
- If you want to publish with a Diamond publisher (no charges to authors or readers, full and immediate open access), explore options on our payments page.
- If you have a traditional publisher in mind, explore with them what UKRI-compliant open access options are available to you, including:
- A 12-month embargo for making the accepted manuscript available via an open access repository.
- A ‘gold’ route option with book processing charge.
- If you need funding for book or chapter charges, complete a Stage One form to ensure you have access to funds when required.
- If the publisher asks for a payment to make the work immediately open access under a CC licence (‘gold’ open access) and the proposed charge is over £10,000 (incl. VAT) then we strongly recommend that you request a discount.
- If you require any further support with these steps, then please contact us.

The UKRI policy for longform publications is new for researchers and their institutions. The guidance provided so far still leaves questions unanswered and we will be working through these as the policy implications become clearer and more guidance is available.
