Publisher deals

The Bodleian Libraries on behalf of the University have signed up to a number of open access agreements with publishers. These have been negotiated by Jisc on behalf of Oxford researchers to help with the cost of making peer reviewed articles open access.

Note: the publisher agreements apply to articles but not to monographs.

A read and publish deal is currently being negotiated with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (through Jisc). While these negotiations are taking place, Oxford authors acknowledging research funding can:

  • for fully open access titles: apply for an APC to be paid from the funder block grants or via other funder-specific routes
  • for hybrid titles: include the rights retention statement on your work during submission and deposit your author accepted manuscript into ORA on acceptance. This will apply a CC BY licence and no embargo as required by specific funders.

You can find further details on the IEEE website.

Sector negotiations with the publisher failed to reach an acceptable agreement for renewing the deal and so there is no transitional agreement available for 2024. We await further news from Jisc.

Oxford authors acknowledging research funding are advised to contact PNASWaiverRequests@nas.edu to request a fee waiver, to ensure their content can be published in PNAS.

If you are a member of a learned society you may be entitled to discount on article processing charges. For example, the American Chemical Society has individual member and institutional discounts on its open access ('AuthorChoice') fees. The University subscribes to the ACS 'All Publications' package so Oxford authors could benefit from both.

Transformative agreements (read and publish)

The University of Oxford has signed transformative ('read and publish') agreements to enable corresponding authors from the University to publish eligible research articles open access for no extra cost. We have signed agreements with the publishers (and eligible journals) listed below.

Read and publish deals cover both subscription payments (allowing you to read) and article processing charges (allowing you to publish). They are known as transformative agreements because they aim to transition towards a full open access model.

If you are funded by a Plan-S signatory funder it is always best to use Journal Checker to check for funder-compliant journals as there are many journals marked as ‘transformative’ that are not listed below.

Criteria

To qualify for any of the deals below, you must:

  1. be a corresponding author
  2. use your Oxford University email address (@ox.ac.uk) when submitting articles to the journal (so that publishers can identify you as Oxford-affiliated)
  3. select the CC BY publication licence when prompted
